This role is member of the Total Rewards team reporting to the Chief People Officer.  The role will be responsible for providing support to the design and development of compensation programs, policies and practices that advance the business strategy across the organization. This role is responsible for the day-to-day operations and compliance of compensation policies and practices. The Compensation Consultant should have excellent customer service skills, the ability to improve existing programs, and manage/monitor compensation administration with strong attention to detail, proficient excel skills, aptitude for talent management and HCM systems, and the ability to prioritize work.

Required skills for this role:

This role is a customer-service, multi-functional role that supports the organization in a variety of areas including but not limited to compensation management, employee experience, and general human resource issues. A Bachelor’s degree, proficiency in Excel and HCM systems is required (Workday preferred); professional certification is a plus. This individual must have the ability to maintain positive working relationships with the employee population and vendor partners. Attention to detail, accuracy, and proficient business writing skills are necessary. 


Key Responsibilities / Duties

1) Identify and submit compensation surveys to benchmark organization’s competitive pay practices.

2) Lead or contribute to survey submissions and ongoing market-pricing efforts 

3) Provide consultation to hiring managers and executives on compensation related matters, including but not limited to salary and incentive recommendations

4) Create presentations suitable for executive level review to include recommendations on salary administration, pay practices, workforce analytics focused on compensation, and pay equity.

5) Create and update financial models to support budgeting and executive compensation 

6) Recommend solutions to more complex compensation issues with senior team members 

7) Build and implement best practices in analytics and compensation processes with Workday HCM

8) Lead annual compensation cycle review with executive team, HR, and senior leadership. Possess ability to model compensation outcomes during in-person meetings with senior leaders. 

9) Develop and facilitate compensation training for Hiring Manager. Develop compensation workforce analytics. Consult with leadership on results and impact to ability to attract and retain critical talent to meet business needs. 

10) Assess and implement compensation technology including systems for compensation planning, market pricing and employee data management 

11) Lead ongoing and ad hoc compensation-related initiatives/projects 

12) Work with payroll, finance and accounting to resolve compensation related employee issues

13) Lead business work teams to build job families and profiles.

14) Consult with Learning and Development to create career pathways across organization

15) Subject matter expert to ensure compliance with DOL, IRS, and FLSA. Knowledge of all pertinent federal and state regulations, filing and compliance requirements,

16) Network with other large YMCA associations on best practices


Work Experience / Knowledge

  • Bachelor’s Degree in human resources, management, business, or related field is required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience developing and implementing compensation
  • CCP or similar certifications preferred 
  • Experience in advanced analytics, technology and/or project management  
  • Experience in roles where you must work quickly and accurately under tight deadlines 
  •  Experience in creating financial analysis and modeling 
  • Experience in creating presentations and presenting to colleagues and leadership 
  • Compensation/HR subject matter knowledge
  • Advanced Excel and PowerPoint skills 
  • Experience using data visualization tools a plus (Tableau/Power BI)


  • Strong computer skills are required in HCM systems, MS Office particularly Excel. Workday experience is a plus.
  • Analytical skills and the ability to identify and execute continuous improvement for practices, policies, processes, and system effectiveness.
  • Strong knowledge of Human Resources disciplines, regulations and practices required.
  • Must have the ability to handle confidential and sensitive information. 
  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work and communicate effectively with all levels and functions in the organization, including external vendors. 
  • Must have strong attention to detail, organization, project coordination skills, and have the ability to multi-task priorities and assignments with minimum supervision. 
  • Mathematical aptitude and analysis skills
  • Demonstrated track record of effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Skills in complex problem solving, judgment, critical thinking and decision-making
  • Skills in consulting and presenting compensation concepts and practices to senior leadership.
